Each item goes through a 5-step process, beginning with the cutting of raw brass bars, which Baldwin uses over 100,000 pounds of each year. From there the craftsman forge the item using an age-old technique called heat forging to give the product shape and design. The third step is trimming, where the item is put through the stamping press to cut any excess metal left by the forge and grinded to reveal a smooth metal. During the fourth stage the item is given 1 of the 20 lustrous finishes that Baldwin offers, and hand coated with an ultra-hard lacquer that makes the item durable and resistant to the effects of wear and tear. In the final step, the item is polished twice, once to remove imperfections and secondly to buff the item to a flawless shine with a jeweler’s rouge.
