The distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole where the knob or lever mounts. Match it to your door, or your latch will sit too short or too long to line up with the strike.
Always measure your own door — don't assume by door type.
Common sizes:
2 3/8" — the most common size for interior residential doors.
2 3/4" — common on exterior and commercial doors, though many residential exteriors use 2 3/8" too.
2 1/4" — typical of mortise locks, often older or antique-style hardware.
Adjustable — the latch adjusts to fit either 2 3/8" or 2 3/4".
The distance from the front face to the back face of the door slab. Hardware is designed to fit specific thicknesses — choose hardware that includes your door’s measurement within its range.
Always measure your own door — don't assume by door type.
Common sizes:
1 3/8" — the standard for most interior residential doors.
1 3/4" — the standard for exterior doors; also used for heavier interior doors and some commercial applications.
Other sizes — older homes, custom doors, and commercial or sound-rated doors may vary.
The diameter of the large round hole drilled through the face of the door where the knob or lever body is mounted. It is sometimes called the bore hole or face bore. The rosette or backplate on your hardware must be wide enough to cover this hole — if the hole is larger than the backplate, the hardware will not cover it.
Always measure your existing hole — don't assume it is the standard size, especially on older doors.
Common sizes:
2 1/8" — the industry standard for virtually all residential knobs and levers. Most hardware is designed to cover this size.
1 5/8" — found on some older doors and certain specialty applications.
3/4" — associated with mortise-style hardware, which uses a smaller face hole and a different internal mechanism.
